Growing up as Diana Rossâ daughter, many of Tracee Ellis Rossâ childhood memories are linked to iconic moments in Black culture or involve pop culture icons. During an appearance on Keke Palmerâs âBaby Itâs Keke Palmerâ podcast, the PATTERN Beauty founder recalled how stars like Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson used to call her house âall the time.â
âMom, itâs Marvin! Mom, itâs Michael,â Ross yelled, mimicking how she would announce their calls. âBy the way, I have a great story from childhoodâŠMy mom was on the phone in her room, and she said âDoes anyone want to talk to Michael before I hang up?â and I said, âYes.ââ
âAnd I came [on the phone], and I said âMichaelâ, everyone at school thinks youâre saying ma-ma-se, ma-ma-sa, ma-ma-coo-sa. But I know what youâre saying, and I told them because I know you,â she continued, referring to the singerâs hit song âWanna Be Startinâ Something.â
Ross then recalls confidently telling Jackson that heâs actually singing âIâve been saved by the sound of Michaelâs song. Iâve been saying by the sound of Michaelâs song.â
To which the King of Pop responded: âIâm not, but it should be.â
âBut thatâs what I thought he was saying, and I kept telling [people] I know Michael, and he told me thatâs what heâs sayingâŠEvery time heâs singing, thatâs what youâre singing. Iâve been saved by the sound of Michaelâs song. Iâm going to ask him,â the actress shared, recalling her confidence as a kid. â[But] no, thatâs not what he was saying. I mean, how many people have been saved by the sound of Michaelâs song? I mean, duh!â
In addition to educating Jackson about his own lyrics, Ross recalls meeting icons like Andy Warhol, whom she was scared of at the time, and Lucille Ball, who she calls yelling âLucy Iâm home! Lucy itâs Tracee,â obnoxiously in the hallways of a hotel as a child when she learned they were staying on the same floor.
âI met some of the most extraordinary people,â she said, reflecting on her childhood.
