Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) is weighing in on her colleague’s decision to share her fertility journey publicly.
This past weekend (Aug 8), Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) announced on social media that she was freezing her eggs, commenting in an Instagram story that not enough women are educated on their bodies and “are not prepared for our own lives.
“We need to show more depictions of women having full lives in every context and every choice,” she said.
Ocasio-Cortez’s announcement has been met with responses across the spectrum, prompting many to discuss the realities of fertility treatment and its costs. At the same time, the progressive politician has made headlines after reportedly splitting from her fiancé Riley Roberts, and for her recent comments about “woke” politics in 2020. She mentioned in the annoucement about freezing her eggs that she is anticipating backlash for being so open.
“This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
The New York representative began documenting her fertility journey through short-form vlogs on social media, tackling topics from egg freezing and ultrasound appointments to the side effects of in vitro fertilization (IVF).
“My hope is that by sharing my experience, it can help others and perhaps normalize not keeping women’s bodies in the shadows,” she wrote in the caption of an Instagram post documenting herself two days into the process.
Crockett, the progressive Texas representative, is defending Ocasio-Cortez’s decision to go public with her fertility story, and urged followers of the 36-year-old congresswoman to send their support.
“I love that AOC is letting y’all all in her business. Being young & in congress… thinking about family & being super high profile is a bit complicated,” Crockett posted on Threads. “She’s chosen to be open & vulnerable & use her platform for educational purposes, but please please please know that she’s being extra vulnerable & so those of you watching & learning should truly send her love & prayers.”
