UMass Dartmouth freshman running back Marvins Antoine was fatally stabbed early Saturday in Providence, Rhode Island, after police say he and several teammates had been at a nearby nightlife venue.
NBC Boston reported that officers responded around 12:30 a.m. to a double stabbing in a Wendy’s parking lot on Charles Street. Antoine, 18, suffered fatal injuries, while a 19-year-old teammate was stabbed in the head and neck area and taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The New York Post identified the injured player as freshman defensive back Kensley Macean. Police said both victims were members of the UMass Dartmouth football team and had been at Mezza Lounge with other teammates before the violence.
Providence Police said the venue had become overcrowded and stopped allowing additional patrons inside before a fight broke out nearby. Investigators are still working to determine what led to the stabbing.
A suspect is being held by UMass Dartmouth police, but authorities had not publicly announced charges as of Saturday afternoon. UMass Dartmouth said there was no ongoing threat to the campus community.
Antoine was a freshman running back from Boston who graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River. The university’s 2026 roster lists him at 5-foot-10 and 180 pounds. He had not yet appeared in a game for the Corsairs this season.
UMass Dartmouth had played Framingham State hours earlier Friday night, losing 23-21 at home.
“The entire UMass Dartmouth community mourns the loss of Marvins Antoine,” the university said in a statement, extending its condolences to his family and friends.
Antoine’s death has left the university and football program mourning a student who had only recently begun his college career. Police have not released additional details about the person being held or said what charges, if any, may follow as the investigation continues.
